Home/ The Selfish Gene/ Chapter 53
Every morning, I get up early and go for a morning run first, buy some breakfast on the way back, take an anti-anxiety medication afterward, and start a new day.
In the past, the Sang family had specialized financial advisors. As long as you pay them, they could achieve considerable returns through quantitative investment and intelligent means. But just a few days ago, the financial consultant of the Sang family called me and said that he could no longer manage the funds for me. I didn’t ask for the detailed reason, because I already knew that this must be instructed by Sang Zhengbai.
Looking at the seven-digit deposits in the account, I found a new private equity firm and entrusted the money to them for management. I could earn at least hundreds of thousands of yuan every year, which would be enough for ordinary people to spend. But for me, that would be too menial.
Lying down and counting money, living aimlessly, sitting in a dark house watching horror movies every day— if it were to be like this, then why did I suffer so much in the nursing home?
In the end, I decided to invest half of the money in quantitative private equity and half in other funds. It’s not a competition, but more like an experiment. I want to see how worse I am compared to computers, and also find something to do for myself.
I haven’t touched any property or car under my name. I asked Tang Bian to tell me that if Sang Zhengbai wants me to send it all back, I can transfer the ownership at any time.
In the next few days, I was prepared and even began to estimate how much money I would have to return if Sang Zhengbai wanted to file a lawsuit against me and asked for all the support he had provided me.
As a result, he didn’t ask me for the house, car, or money. He just published it in the newspaper and completely severed the father-son relationship with me.
Looking at the tofu-sized “statement” in the newspaper, I cut it out and stuffed it into my wallet.
At this time, I really have to sigh, Ji Chenfeng is indeed Sang Zhengbai’s son. When it comes to treating me, the two people’s attitudes are surprisingly similar. If you say you don’t want it, then you don’t want it, without procrastinating at all.
Xu Xi specifically called to comfort me about this, but maybe it was because of the medication I was taking, or maybe I just didn’t want to think about it, so I didn’t feel too uncomfortable. Sang Zhengbai is not my father, and he never acted like a father to me either. In that case, why should I cling to this fake father-son relationship?
I was pondering about the overall trend of the market when suddenly the phone rang at my hand. I picked it up without looking at who it was.
“Hello?”
“Ah, Mr. Sang, you finally answered the phone.” The voice on the other end of the phone was somewhat familiar, but I just couldn’t remember where I had heard it before.
“I am the landlord of the house you are currently living in. I have been calling you for the past two months, but I can’t get in touch with you, and you didn’t reply to my messages either. So I thought something happened to you.” The other party quickly identified themselves and explained the purpose of the call, “That’s it…”
The landlord’s son suddenly brought his girlfriend home two months ago and said he wanted to get married. After questioning, it was found out that the woman was already more than three months pregnant and her belly would start to show if they kept delaying. The landlord has two apartments in total, one for himself and one for rent. Now that his son is getting married, the rented apartment will naturally be taken back to be used as a wedding house.
“Can you please move out as soon as possible. The deposit will be refunded in full and we will provide you with appropriate compensation. It’s really urgent, so it’s best to vacate it in the next few days. Thank you, thank you.” After the landlord finished speaking, he hung up without waiting for my reaction..
I stared blankly at the screen of my mobile phone. A few seconds later, I received a text message from the landlord, asking me to move out tomorrow, otherwise they would not be responsible for any losses incurred.
What is this?
Feeling upset, I put down my phone and looked around. Although I understood that this is not my real “home”, I had left many memories with Ji Chenfeng here. Until now, I only dared to sleep on the sofa, and every day I reminisced about the moments I spent here with Ji Chenfeng. Now if you ask me to move out, let me move out… That’s not it… won’t I lose even this last memory?
And in such a hurry, where can I find a suitable house?
Feeling a headache, I grabbed my hair, feeling extremely annoyed.
There wasn’t much to pack, and Tang Bian came to help me pack the next day and asked if I wanted to stay with him for now, but I refused.
“You only have one room there, how can you accommodate two people?”
“I can sleep on the sofa…?”
Looking at Tang Bian’s silly face, I sighed: “No need, I’ll stay in a hotel until I find a house.”
Except for some medication, clothes, and electronic supplies that were stuffed into the suitcase I packed to bring to the hotel, the rest was all brought back by Tang Bian to his house.
“Ah, brother, you haven’t sent out these greeting cards yet?” When moving things into the trunk, Tang Bian saw the small cardboard box filled with greeting cards.
How could I possibly tell him that this was something that was sent out and then returned?
“Well, no, you can help me keep it for now.” I nodded vaguely, stuffed the last box of things into the trunk, and urged Tang Bian to leave quickly.
“Then don’t forget to let me know when you find a place to live.” Tang Bian got in the car and stuck his head out to remind me again.
“Got it.” I waved my hand and watched him leave.
In the evening, I dragged my suitcase and went to the sign language training class. During this period, I had been thinking about where to stay, which hotel, and how many days to stay. I was a little absent-minded throughout class. Half of the time, I stared at Ji Chenfeng’s face in a daze, and the other half of the time, I secretly scrolled through my phone under the table to find where to stay tonight.
Ji Chenfeng must have noticed it, but he didn’t care and let me wander around the whole time. Perhaps in his opinion, I didn’t really come here to learn sign language, so he didn’t have any expectations for me to study seriously.
After class, I, Ji Chenfeng, and Meng Xueyan went to the subway station together. Meng Xueyan saw me carrying an oversized suitcase and couldn’t help but wonder where I was going.
“Looking for a place to live.” I said with a smile, “I was kicked out by the landlord.”
Meng Xueyan was startled for a moment, seemingly unsure how to continue the conversation. She probably couldn’t figure out why every time she talked to me, she would end up asking about something embarrassing.
“I’m going to buy something, you guys go first.” Just after leaving the activity center, Ji Chenfeng stopped in front of a convenience store and spoke to Meng Xueyan, then turned around and walked in.
No matter how I look at it, this is just to avoid me.
I tightened my grip on the suitcase handle, and a scorching, difficult to expel gas seemed to emanate from my chest, making my whole body feel uncomfortable all over.
“Then let’s go first.” Retracting my gaze, I said to Meng Xueyan, restraining the urge to chase after him.
Perhaps because it was Saturday, there were a lot fewer people taking the subway at night. Meng Xueyan and I both had seats this time.
When I got off at the Fly City station, Meng Xueyan was surprised: “Are you going to stay here tonight?”
I know why she was surprised. Fly City is dirty, messy, and dangerous. It’s really not a good place to stay.
“It’s cheap here. I don’t have much money left.” I only have a few hundred thousand flexible funds available on hand, so I really need to save some money.
Meng Xueyan hesitated, seemingly worried about my safety.
“I’m a grown man, what can possibly happen to me.” I comforted her and waved goodbye to her as soon as the subway door opened.
Dragging a huge suitcase along the way, I was already sweating profusely when I stopped in front of the long steps. I sat on the suitcase panting heavily, with cicadas chirping in my ears.
It’s so noisy. So thirsty.
As I was hesitating whether to find a small shop to buy a bottle of water first, from a distance, I saw Ji Chenfeng walking towards this direction.
It seemed like he didn’t stay too long at the convenience store.
Holding a plastic bag from the convenience store in his hand, he continued walking up without hesitation, as if he hadn’t seen me.
“You still owe me a birthday wish.” In order to prevent him from removing the cochlear implant again, I simply finished speaking my plan in one breath, “I am homeless now, please take me in for a few days before I find a new place to live.”
Ji Chenfeng stopped and turned to look at me, his eyes unwavering: “There are many hotels in Hong City.”
“I have no money.” I opened my eyes and told a lie. “Sang Zhengbai has severed the father-son relationship with me. I have nothing left.”
I took out my wallet, pulled out the newspaper clip inside, and handed it to the other party.
Ji Chenfeng glanced at the crumpled newspaper clipping but didn’t answer: “You can go find your friends.”
“I’m not the young master of the Sang family anymore. Where can I find any friends?” I raised my other hand, but didn’t dare to grab him. I only dared to tug at the bag in his hand, “Doctor Ji, Teacher Ji… just two days. I’ll move out in two days.”
Ji Chenfeng took a step back, as if afraid that I would accidentally touch him.
He took back his bag and gave a simple and clear answer: “It’s inconvenient.” After speaking, he left without looking back.
Inconvenient? Is it also inconvenient for Jian Xing to come to your home to find you?
Looking at his receding figure, I bit my lip and sat on the suitcase for a while. After regaining my strength, I carried the suitcase up the stairs step by step, using all of my strength. Finally, I lifted my nearly 20 kilogram suitcase to Ji Chenfeng’s doorstep.
Knocking on the iron door, I shouted loudly: “Just for one night. Take me in for one night, and I will leave tomorrow. I will never bother you again!”
I often think well, but then all my plans fall into disarray when I see Ji Chenfeng.
At first, I clearly wanted to stay at a hotel, but for some reason, I couldn’t bear to see him deliberately walk into a convenience store to avoid traveling with me. My mind is filled with… the more he doesn’t want to see me, the more I want to get in front of him.
It’s hard to change one’s nature. No matter how much medicine I take, it seems that I can’t change my extreme self in my bones.
Do I really want to stay for only two days? Certainly not.
Once I get in, I will never leave. At night, I would secretly pry open the door of his room, get under his bed, and use the thickest chains to lock him in the room for the rest of his life until every drop of water in his body evaporated.
As I gradually stopped knocking on the door, I felt deeply painful and frustrated by the fact that I hadn’t changed at all.
My hand slipped down, and I slowly retreated. Feeling exhausted, I sat down on the ground leaning against the suitcase.
Holding my knees with both hands, I lowered my face, thinking that in a while, when I feel better, I will get up and look for a hotel to spend the night.
I don’t want to move the suitcase down from such a high place again. Why don’t I just kick it? It shouldn’t be so easy to break…
So thirsty. I knew I should have bought a bottle of water first.
Now, I really feel like a homeless wild dog.
I want to laugh, but I can’t. I want to cry, but there are no tears at all. I hugged myself tighter, burying my face in my knees, and my whole body began to tremble uncontrollably.
…Give me a home, give me a place to go back to.
I already know longing and know what love is. Please God, I will never make him sad again or let him down again. I am willing to protect him for the rest of my life and become his true “hero”. So… give me another chance.
Don’t leave me, don’t leave me alone. I am willing to lose even half of my lifespan, just let him look at me again.
I really miss him so much…
I have never believed in ghosts and gods, but I inexplicably started praying.
I even find it funny. This is not a temple, so how can it really be effective? I sniffed and was about to get up when the door in front of me made a piercing sound and was gradually pushed open from the inside.
Ji Chenfeng lowered his eyes and looked at me for a moment, then held down the iron door and moved aside to make way.
“Just one night. Come in and don’t disturb the neighbors.”
I opened my mouth and looked up at him in a daze, feeling caught off guard by this sudden change.
God has appeared.
