Home/ The Selfish Gene/ Chapter 64
He knew….he actually knew it a long time ago…
Then didn’t he ever find it strange? Why did I follow him, why did I deliberately appear by his side? From the beginning to the end, did he not even doubt me for a moment?
Or is it because you like someone, you can ignore everything that’s wrong? Can such unreasonable things be automatically rationalized?
I wanted to wake him up and ask him clearly, but seeing his calm sleeping face, I really couldn’t bear to wake him up.
I leaned over and pressed a kiss on his forehead, using my lips to caress the corner of his eyes over and over again.
Forget it, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future anyway, let’s slowly dig out his secrets.
Ji Chenfeng’s home has no air conditioning, only an electric fan. Even with doors and windows open in summer, the heat is still unbearable. Of course I am happy about his behavior of cherishing my clothes so much, but it is not suitable to lay a bed of winter clothes in such weather. Besides….
I threw all the clothes surrounding Ji Chenfeng on the bed into the closet, but couldn’t pull the tie in his hand, so I had to let him keep it.
With a helpless sigh, I lay next to Ji Chenfeng, ignoring the scorching heat and sticking to his back, hugging him with one hand.
Besides, I’m already here, so why would he want to hug a pile of clothes?
I woke up several times in one night, mostly because of the heat, and each time I opened my eyes, my posture with Ji Chenfeng was different.
From me hugging him at first, to being hugged by him later. I slept very hard, and sometimes I would struggle uncomfortably, but the more I moved, the tighter his grip became, as if being caught in a big net.
“It’s so hot…” I mumbled discontentedly and was briefly awake for a short while.
The wall of flesh in front of me made a soft “hmm” sound, but the embrace didn’t loosen at all, even bringing me closer.
The next morning, I woke up before Ji Chenfeng, and when I opened my eyes, I saw our hands intertwined together.
After a night of wandering around, the tie had gone from being tightly held by Ji Chenfeng to being entangled like a headphone cord between us. At first glance, it seems like a red thread connecting me and him.
Thinking like this, I felt Ji Chenfeng’s fingers move, as if he was about to wake up.
I subconsciously closed my eyes and pretended to sleep, secretly paying attention to his reaction.
He must have also seen our intertwined hands at first sight, and the muscles on his hands stiffened immediately, and it took him a while to relax.
Fingers separated from my hands, and the tangled tie was pulled away bit by bit. The bed bounced, and I quietly opened my eyes and saw Ji Chenfeng sitting up, holding the tie in his hand, his expression looking particularly bewildered.
Why did it appear here on his own even though he had hidden it well? It’s very easy for me to guess what he’s thinking.
Without making a sound throughout the entire process, Ji Chenfeng quietly stuffed the tie back into the closet and left the bedroom. The next second the bedroom door closed, and I couldn’t help but bury my face into the pillow and laugh so hard that my whole body shook.
After five minutes, I got up from the bed and walked out of the bedroom pretending to have just woken up.
Ji Chenfeng was opening the refrigerator door, probably not expecting me to follow him so quickly. He was stunned for a moment, then quickly looked away in a panic.
“It’s still early, you can sleep a little longer.”
I watched with great interest as his neck gradually turned crimson. I crossed my arms and leaned against the wall, saying, “I’ve been sleeping too much these past few days and can’t sleep anymore.”
He kept the refrigerator door open. I don’t know if he was in panic about the lack of memory last night, but he didn’t move for a long time. It wasn’t until the refrigerator sounded an alarm that he turned his head and asked me as if he was awakened: “Do you want to eat an egg burrito…?”
“Eat, I’ll eat whatever you make.”
He took two eggs from the refrigerator and entered the kitchen without looking at me, as if he was afraid that I would mention what happened last night if he stayed any longer.
Because his reaction was so interesting, I spent the whole morning in a patient mood— patience to hug him, patience to kiss him, patience to pounce on him.
After finishing breakfast, I was scrolling through my phone in the living room while eating. Ji Chenfeng came out of the bedroom after changing clothes and put a key in front of me.
I looked up from his slender fingers and saw his drooping black eyelashes.
“Aren’t you going to lock me up?” I said with a smile.
His eyelashes trembled and he stood up straight, saying, “It’s best to rest before the injury is healed. After the injury is healed, you can go anywhere you want.”
Now, of course, I won’t be foolish enough to ask him if he still wants to drive me away. He has already given me the key, and whether to stay or not is entirely up to me?
“Don’t you have a headache after drinking so much last night? Otherwise, take an extra half day off.” I walked him to the door and mentioned what happened last night for the first time.
“It’s okay, it doesn’t hurt.” He turned his back to me and squatted down to put on his shoes. “I’ll have to work overnight today and come back tomorrow morning. You don’t have to wait for me.”
“Is the workload so heavy all at once?” If you take two days off, you have to work 24 hours a day. That guy Jian Xing must be squeezing his employees too much.
“I can rest at night when there are no emergencies.” Ji Chenfeng stood up after putting on his shoes and pushed open the door.
A faint breeze poured in from outside, accompanied by the noisy chirping of cicadas.
It is said that male cicadas are the ones who make sounds, and the reason they showcase themselves so hard is simply to attract female cicadas to mate with them.
From this, it can be seen that in order to mate, one must do everything possible to present their best to the person they like, otherwise they will be snatched away by the one who screams louder.
“Be careful on the road.” I said goodbye to Ji Chenfeng.
Ji Chenfeng had already walked to the door, but suddenly stopped and asked, “Did I do anything strange yesterday?” He turned around and couldn’t help but ask.
You didn’t do anything strange, but you did a bunch of cute things.
Seeing his concerned expression, I deliberately avoided the question and didn’t answer: “Since you know that you are a poor drinker, why did you still drink so much?”
“Because…” He had a puzzled expression on his face, opened his mouth, and only uttered one word before getting stuck.
I raised my eyebrows and gestured for him to continue.
“Because I brought up your matter.” He sighed, seeming quite regretful. At the end, he said with a hint of helplessness, “It’s all because of you…”
I was fascinated by the love-hate emotions that emerged in his eyes, and was stunned for a moment. By the time I reacted, he had already pushed the door open and walked out.
I rushed to the door, only to see his figure disappear around the corner.
Because he mentioned me, he drank too much unconsciously. It seems that I really make him very upset.
There is no one in this world that worries him more than me.
The corners of my lips rose unconsciously, and I was in an incredibly good mood. Humming to myself, I closed the door and blocked out the noisy cicadas again.
Sort out the wardrobe, wash what needs to be washed, and hang what needs to be hung. Looking around the palm-sized bedroom, I have a headache. This place is too small. With just one suitcase, it feels like there won’t be much space left.
I still have several big boxes at Tang Bian’s place. I can’t just ask him to bring them over in advance for everything I need in the future, right?
It seems that it is not impossible either.
The clothes in the suitcase were neatly stacked according to Ji Chenfeng’s habit and stuffed into the drawer. The medicine box and other miscellaneous things were placed in the living room cabinet. The last thing was the red ring box containing two rings.
Although I don’t know when it will be used, it should be soon. I need to find a place to store it properly.
I searched many places to hide the ring box, fearing that Ji Chenfeng would find it wherever I put it. In desperation, I put it back into the suitcase again, and then stuffed the suitcase under the bed.
I never felt that the night was so long. I have wanted to call Ji Chenfeng countless times, but I am afraid it will affect his work.
We only parted ways in the morning, but I still miss him so much that I was about to go crazy.
It’s not like I haven’t been alone before. At that time, I was carefree and happy to be single, but now I am restless, desperately missing Ji Chenfeng. It feels as if there are two souls in one body. If put together, they would probably fight to the point of life and death.
After finally falling asleep, I vaguely heard a knock on the door. I jumped out of bed and found that it was already dawn.
Thinking it was Ji Chenfeng who had returned, I excitedly got out of bed and stumbled to the door. As soon as I opened the door, it was completely different from what I had imagined. I frowned very rudely, maybe even a little bit disgusted.
“I haven’t seen you for a long time.”
Tang Zhaoyue wore a dark-gray professional dress and looked at me with a smile on her lips. Compared to my surprise, she seemed to have known early on that I would be the one opening the door.
I took a step back and looked at her warily: “What are you doing here?”
She is Tang Bian’s mother and Sang Zhengbai’s confidant. I can trust Tang Bian, but I can’t be unguarded against this woman.
“Mr. Sang invites you to have morning tea together. He has something to say to you.”
“We have severed the relationship between father and son. What does he want to say now?”
“There is still something to say.” Tang Zhaoyue was respectful on the surface, but in reality, her attitude was tough, “The car is waiting for you below. Let’s go down.”
I probably also know why Sang Zhengbai is looking for me. Except for Ji Chenfeng, his biological son, what else can he possibly want.
If I refuse today, Sang Zhengbai will have many ways to tie me up to have tea in the future, so it is better to follow honestly at the beginning and see what he has to say.
After thinking about it, I asked Tang Zhaoyue to wait at the door, went into the house to take care of myself a little, and changed into new clothes. I tried to call Ji Chenfeng, but couldn’t get through. I don’t know if it was because he didn’t hear the phone on the way or for some other reason. In the end, I had to send him a text message, telling him that I would be back soon, so that he didn’t have to worry.
Sang Zhengbai might only be free early in the morning, so he chose to have morning tea at a Cantonese-style teahouse near Zhengyi Group.
After passing through the huge aquarium, under the leadership of Tang Zhaoyue, I walked all the way deep into the building, and finally entered the box where Sang Zhengbai was sitting alone.
The private room was magnificent. Looking through the window, you can see the city’s landmark building not far away, framed by lattice windows, like a moving painting, decorating the room.
“Sit down.” Sang Zhengbai saw me standing at the door and pointed to a seat opposite him.
When we were father and son in name, I hated eating with him so much. I never imagined that now that we were no longer a father and son, I still couldn’t escape having to eat with him.
As soon as I sat down, Tang Zhaoyue picked up the teapot and poured me a cup of tea, then retreated to her usual position— behind Sang Zhengbai.
“What do you want from me?” I just took a sip of tea but didn’t move the chopsticks.
“I came to you today because I want to make a deal with you.” He picked up a shrimp dumpling and put it into his mouth. He paused for a moment until he swallowed the food in his mouth before continuing, “As long as you leave Ji Chenfeng, the conditions can be as you wish.”
Sure enough, as expected, it was about Ji Chenfeng.
Looking at his aging face, it would be a lie to say that I didn’t feel anything in my heart. Anyone who encounters such a thing will probably be anxious. However, these slight emotions are not enough to affect my determination towards Ji Chenfeng— no one can snatch him away from me, not even Sang Zhengbai.
“You don’t think it’s because of me misleading him with my lies that he doesn’t go back to the Sang family to inherit the family business, do you?” I said with a half-smile.
Sang Zhengbai let out a cold snort from his nose, as if to say: “Isn’t it?”
“His dream is to become an excellent Veterinarian. Even without me, he will continue to be a Veterinarian.”
Sang Zhengbai took a sip of tea and sneered: “Are there not many ways to prevent him from finding a job in Hong City? When he has nothing, he will naturally come back to me.”
This idea cannot be said to be familiar, it can only be said to be exactly the same. He’s obviously not my father, so why did I inherit all the bad things from him?
I leaned back into the chair and taught him as someone who has experienced it before: “Then do it. If you are not afraid of death, just do it and see if he will forgive you.”
