Chapter 37 – The Selfish Gene

Home/ The Selfish Gene/ Chapter 37

When passing by, I intentionally knocked over the coffee on the table. The dark brown liquid immediately formed a sharp stain on the off-white carpet, which should be difficult to remove without professional help.

The two people who were in a strange stalemate at the door heard the sound. Before anyone could speak, I said to Ji Chenfeng embarrassedly: “Dr. Ji, could you please call the hotel cleaning service for me? Just tell them that I accidentally spilled the coffee.”

Ji Chenfeng looked at Zheng Jieyuan, who was still standing at the door, and then at me. He might have realized that I was intentionally pushing him away, but he just nodded and walked towards the bedroom.

“Clothes.” He paused slightly in front of me and reminded me in a low voice.

Looking down, I realized that the bathrobe was only tugged slightly to prevent my body from exposing itself.

I quickly rearranged my bathrobe and fastened my belt. After finishing all this, Ji Chenfeng, who was standing in front of me, took another step towards the bedroom. After entering, he even closed the door.

Staring at the closed door, I pursed my lips, calmed down my mind, and turned around to deal with the big trouble at the door.

“What’s going on? Isn’t he the handsome guy from the food stall where we ate before?” Zheng Jieyuan couldn’t help but look towards the bedroom. If I hadn’t blocked him, he might have wanted to rush over and look at Ji Chenfeng from top to bottom, inside and out.

“It’s him.”

I told Zheng Jieyuan that because Tang Bian failed to take good care of Xiaocao before, and it almost died. With the responsibility of raising it, I decided to find a professional to take care of it. It just so happened that something happened to Ji Chenfeng’s family during this time, and he resigned from the pet hospital. He was very short of money, so I just did him a favor and hired him as my personal veterinarian.

Zheng Jieyuan frowned slightly when he heard this, as if thinking about something.

I was so nervous that within a short time my palms were covered with fine sweat.

“I really couldn’t tell… you’re pretty good to that turtle.” Zheng Jieyuan relaxed his brows, “I was surprised when you went to the hospital for it. Now you actually found a veterinarian to take care of it. That’s awesome.”

He actually believed it.

The stone in my heart fell, and I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. While I was thankful, I also looked at Zheng Jieyuan with admiration again. He actually believed the nonsense of a private veterinarian. I simply didn’t know whether to call him naive or stupid. No wonder Lu Sui was able to call him a brother. Zheng Jieyuan wouldn’t doubt anything other people told him, and his way of thinking is still like that of a child.

“Not only the turtle, but also two cats…”

Taking this opportunity, I also explained to him the reason why I promised to attend the party last time but missed it without any reason.

Zheng Jieyuan nodded and glanced at the direction of the bedroom. He lowered his voice and whispered, “Since he is short of money, ask your aunt to sign him at a super low price. It will be a guaranteed profit without losing any money.”

Here we go again. Why on earth does everyone insist on letting Ji Chenfeng be a model? Being seen by Zheng Jieyuan was already a mistake. How could Ji Chenfeng be allowed to shoot advertisements and expose his face to more people? Didn’t I just make him lose his job just to keep him locked up by my side?

“Let’s discuss it later.” I changed the subject, “What are you doing here so early in the morning?”

“Oh, I heard some gossip about you from my dad, so I came here in a moment of excitement? You kid, you didn’t even tell me when you found a girlfriend. My dad said she is from the Gu family…”

Not allowing him to continue speaking, I reflexively pushed him against the wall and covered his mouth.

The stone in my heart that had just been put down for a while lifted up again, and my heart was beating so fast that it was almost about to explode. I didn’t have time to explain to Zheng Jieyuan, and I didn’t think about how to explain. I only knew that I had to stop him and not let him mention Gu Ying under Ji Chenfeng’s nose here.

“Huh?” Zheng Jieyuan struggled and slapped my wrist repeatedly, gesturing for me to let go.

Looking back at the bedroom, I saw that the door was still closed and my tense shoulders slowly collapsed, as if exhausted.

Looking straight into Zheng Jieyuan’s eyes, I didn’t dare to let go of my strength and said softly: “I beg you, don’t say anything. Don’t even say a word.”

Zheng Jieyuan has known me since childhood and has been clearly aware of my temperament. People have always begged me, where is there a time when I begged? Hearing me say the word “beg”, his movements of patting me stopped, his face full of disbelief.

“I’ll explain it to you later when I have time.” This little time was not enough for me to come up with a reasonable explanation.

Although Zheng Jieyuan was puzzled, he still gave me an “ok” gesture.

I gradually moved my palm away, but because of too much tension, my fingers trembled as if I was a Parkinson’s patient.

So embarrassing…

I was… so embarrassed because I was afraid that Ji Chenfeng would find out about the fake girlfriend. It shouldn’t be like this, this is very wrong. How can I be afraid of him? It should be up to me to control and tame him. What about flirting with women? How could a dodder, who entirely relies on me for survival, not even have this kind of tolerance?

“I almost thought my teeth would get broken by you.” Zheng Jieyuan licked his front teeth and rubbed his cheeks.

“I have to go out later, you should go back first.” Not wanting to deal with him anymore, I decisively issued an order to expel him.

Zheng Jieyuan was stunned: “Huh?”

“If you have anything to say, we will talk about it next time, you can go now.”

Although he has long been accustomed to my bad temper, he was still a bit confused.

“Then…I’ll leave first, remember to contact me.”

“I will.” I agreed and pushed him out of the door.

As soon as he left, I quickly walked towards the bedroom door and put my ear to it, wanting to hear Ji Chenfeng’s movements inside.

Of course, nothing could be heard.

Gently pushing the door open, the blackout curtains that were closed before were now fully opened, allowing enough light to fall into the room, making everything in the shadows invisible.

Ji Chenfeng was sitting on the bedside, his hands hanging naturally in front of him. He was flipping and playing with something in his hands until I approached him.

“Doctor Ji?” He didn’t respond and kept looking at the thing in his hand. I was a bit uneasy and called out his name, “…Chenfeng?”

Still no response.

When I was about one meter away from him, he seemed to have just realized that there was someone else in the room, and turned his head to look at me.

“You…” From this, I finally understood why he didn’t respond to my call— he had taken off his cochlear implant.

“Have you finished chatting?” Ji Chenfeng put the external device back on his ear and stood up, walking towards me.

“Why did you take it off?” I asked as my eyes shifted from the well-fitted black instrument to his handsome face.

Ji Chenfeng said calmly: “If you wanted me to hear your conversation, you wouldn’t have asked me to leave.”

The heart was hit by an unknown long arrow in the void, but it was too sudden for the brain to react, resulting in missing the best opportunity to defend. If this conversation is not immediately picked up, no matter how it is remedied later, there will always be a ghost in the heart.

“Actually, I…” I looked away and avoided eye contact with him, so as not to let him see any clues, “I almost accidentally killed someone three years ago. I drank a lot at that time and my mind wasn’t clear. When the other party provoked me, I lost my sense of proportion. Although the matter was resolved later, I started suffering from severe insomnia from then on.”

Turning around and walking towards the chest of drawers in the corner, I pulled out the first drawer. There were many regular medicines in it, including one bottle of sedative and anti-anxiety medicine, commonly known as sleeping pills, which were prescribed to me by Zhou Jiyu.

Even when I was trying to get the “School Star” award, I never had to rack my brains like this.

Holding the bottle of medicine, I walked back to Ji Chenfeng and handed the bottle to him: “That person just now is my friend, named Zheng Jieyuan. Three years ago… That incident happened at his birthday party. The person I injured at that time came back recently, and Zheng Jieyuan has been worried about me, fearing that I would be harmed by the other party. This is why he came here today.”

Ji Chenfeng took the medicine bottle and carefully checked the instructions on the bottle: “Have you been taking this all along?”

“I take it when I can’t sleep.” I wrapped his hand with mine along with the medicine bottle and said, “I asked you to leave because I’m afraid he’ll spill the beans and worry you. If you don’t believe me, I can call him back and you can confront him face to face.”

“No, I believe you.”

Of course Ji Chenfeng possibly couldn’t ask me to call Zheng Jieyuan back, and I was sure he wouldn’t do that.

Caressing his cheek, I stared at him affectionately: “Don’t worry, I will never hide anything from you again in the future.”

Lying is like having too many lice but it doesn’t itch. If exposed, you just need to think of another way.

Originally, the atmosphere was here, and if it developed properly, even if we don’t fall on the big bed, we should at least kiss and express our feelings to each other. However, Ji Chenfeng seemed to have taken the wrong medicine today. He unexpectedly abandoned his beloved sport and was more concerned about my health.

“Are you seeing a doctor?” He asked me.

“Yes.” Thinking that he still had doubts, I offered, “It’s just in time. I have a follow-up appointment this afternoon. You can come with me.”

Zhou Jiyu’s clinic doesn’t have many consulting rooms, but there are several waiting rooms. I guess it was set up to meet the guests’ need for privacy.

Arranging Ji Chenfeng in one of the waiting rooms, I stuffed a medical journal from the magazine rack into his arms and warned, “I’ll be out soon. You must obediently wait here for me. Don’t run around or you will be caught and eaten by the big bad wolf.”

I gently pinched Ji Chenfeng’s cheek and said, “The big bad wolf loves to eat little babies like you.”

A helpless smile flashed in Ji Chenfeng’s eyes, and he said, “Okay, I won’t run around and wait for you here obediently.”

As soon as my fingers left Ji Chenfeng’s face, they seemed to be pulled back, wrapping around the back of his neck, and I leaned down to kiss his lips.

It’s all Zheng Jieyuan’s fault. He came at the wrong time, otherwise Ji Chenfeng wouldn’t be so restrained. I can no longer stay in that hotel and quickly need to find another place. I carefully need to hide him somewhere where no one can find him…

After all, we were outside, so I couldn’t be too reckless. When I felt that both of us were about to lose control, I forced myself to pull away.

After straightening my clothes and wiping the saliva from my lips, I glanced at Ji Chenfeng’s key parts and smiled maliciously: “Doctor Ji, we are still outside.”

He covered his crotch with the magazine and didn’t say anything, just silently condemning me with his eyes. Apart from his breathing that was faster than usual, his face looked as usual, and there was no other awkwardness. But I could bet that the back of his neck must be terrifyingly hot right now.

Before leaving, I adjusted the angle of the blinds slightly lower for Ji Chenfeng.

“I may need half an hour, Doctor Ji. If you can’t wait for me, just play by yourself. Don’t worry, there is no surveillance here.”

Without a reply from Ji Chenfeng, I happily opened the door and walked briskly into the consulting room.

Comfortably sitting on the sofa, I waited for five minutes before Zhou Jiyu arrived in a panic. His forehead and temples were wet, as if he had just washed his face.

“Sorry…I’m feeling a bit unwell today.”

He looked really pale and uncomfortable.

“Well, take care of yourself.” I drank the coffee and didn’t make a fuss about him arriving late.

Zhou Jiyu sat down behind his desk. For about two minutes, he kept looking through my case file, as if he suddenly discovered a significant psychological breakthrough in my condition, ignoring all external interference and devoting himself to a selfless level.

“Hey.” I put down the coffee cup, just because I could tolerate him being late doesn’t mean I will tolerate his neglect.

Zhou Jiyu regained his composure at my cold call, his face even uglier, no longer pale, but gray, like a dead person.

I couldn’t stand it anymore: “If you can’t do it, just go to the hospital…”

“How are you and your partner doing? He…has he completely fallen in love with you?” Zhou Jiyu pushed the files aside and crossed his fingers in front of me. Although he was still smiling, his clasped fingers still revealed his true feelings— he was trying very hard to endure it.

Tsk, it’s fine if you want to endure it, but don’t die in front of me, it will ruin my mood.

“Of course.” Cursing in my heart, I crossed my legs and said in a tone that perfectly satisfied my male vanity, “From body to heart, he is completely inseparable from me. Now even if I say that I want to marry someone else, he wouldn’t dare to say anything. Not only will he not leave me, but he might even cry and follow me around to serve me without any honor.”

I feel like when ji chenfeng was sniffing sang nian’s coat, he was actually smelling gu ying’s perfume. having no hearing meant his other sense are probably sharper than other people. this can be backed by that scene in the vet hospital when he reacted sharply to sang nian’s aunt’s perfume, saying he hated that scent.
seeing the psychiatrist ‘s reaction he probably realized ji chenfeng, his ex, was the prey sang nian was talking about all along. maybe hes the one who ends up revealing everything to ji chenfeng later on.
and i also have a feeling ji chenfeng isnt completely deaf but can still hear a little without his implant, he probably overheard zheng jieyuan, or part of it. in the modeling building bathroom sang nian had asked how jin chenfeng understood his tones just from lip syncing alone and ji chenfeng replied perfunctorily before being interrupted by the staff.
