Home/ The Selfish Gene/ Chapter 21
This kiss seemed to have consumed all of Ji Chenfeng’s strength tonight, as he slid down against my lips, and collapsed on my body.
After being stunned for a moment, I turned my head to look at Yan Shanhua at the door. I stared at her silently for a while, and then helped Ji Chenfeng into the room under her frightened gaze.
As I put Ji Chenfeng, who was completely unconscious, on the bed, there was the sound of a suppressed cough from behind. Just now I saw that Yan Shanhua’s complexion was not very good, and she should be sick.
I randomly pulled a corner of the quilt over Ji Chenfeng’s body, then took off the instrument on his ear and put it aside. After finishing all this, I stretched my sore muscles, and turned around to walk outside.
I had no intention to care about Yan Shanhua, nor did I want to explain anything to her. I just walked past her indifferently, not even bothering to give her a glance.
I crouched down to put on my shoes and pushed the door open. Breathing in the fresh air outside and unconsciously squeezing my lungs to the limit, I exhaled deeply. After I walked a few steps, I heard the sound of the iron door suddenly being opened behind me, as well as the sound of messy footsteps mixed in.
“Xiao Nian…”
I had already expected that she would come, so I wasn’t surprised. I stopped and turned around to look at her.
Yan Shanhua stumbled to catch up with me. Not knowing whether she was walking too fast or was too shocked, but in a panic she grabbed my arm, and her whole person fell to the ground. Her bones protruded because of the too much force, and she trembled, almost pulling my coat off the body.
“Xiao Nian, don’t retaliate against me like this, please, don’t do this…” She raised her face to look at me with tears in her eyes, “It’s all my fault, it’s all my fault! Don’t do this, I beg you…I really beg you!”
I stared at her numbly, and remained unmoved: “Do you know what kind of life I lived in the Sang family after you left?”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…I’m sorry…” She apologized over and over again, as if she had been scared out of her wits, and didn’t listen to me at all.
“After you left, Sang Zhengbai found another nanny to take care of me. In front of others, she treated me very well, as if I was really her own son. But once there were only two of us left, she would scold me and beat me in all kinds of ways.”
Yan Shanhua’s crying suddenly stopped. She opened her mouth slightly and stared at me blankly, but the tears still rolled down the corners of her eyes uncontrollably, and her body was completely frozen as if someone had pressed the pause button.
“She would make me eat the food that fell on the ground, burn me with cigarette butts, slap me, and press my head into the water…” I thought I would feel pain when I mentioned these things, after all, the last time Shi Hao mentioned these things, I almost knocked his brains out. I don’t know why, but this time it didn’t feel painful at all. If I have to explain it, it’s a bit exhilarating—- venting my emotions and stabbing Yan Shanhua, all of it makes me feel an unprecedented sense of pleasure.
“Sang Zhengbai was always busy with business matters, just like he was when you were there. He was very reassured and thought that the nanny took care of me well. I was tortured by her until I was five years old like this. But do you know what is the most ridiculous thing? I thought she was my mother, I thought that…all mothers were like that.”
Nobody told me what “mother” really means, but when I learned to clumsily call that woman “mother” like other children, she seemed happy and was less cruel to me afterwards.
But after I grew up, I realized that the other party was not happy because I called her mother, but because… she fooled all the wealthy people around her with her lowly status and made fun of those who looked down on her. She felt pleased with herself because of her intelligence and courage.
She was happy to let me call her mother over and over again, and then when I relaxed my guard, she would give me the sharpest pain. Just like those animals in the circus, even though they have the ability to overthrow the animal trainer, they will still obediently crawl at the feet of their masters, trembling and not daring to disobey in the slightest. She enjoyed the pleasure of “taming” me as if I was her dog.
If Xu Xi hadn’t discovered the scars on my body, and exposed the nanny’s crimes, perhaps I would have been abused and grown up like this, thinking that this is the pain that everyone must experience to grow up.
“No…” Yan Shanhua showed a terrified expression and shook her head weakly, her throat still seemed to be blocked by something as she struggled to speak with difficulty.
“Where was Ji Chenfeng when I was being abused? He grew up in your care and was held in your palm carefully.” I lifted my arm little by little to get rid of her entanglement, “Even three years ago, you came to me to borrow money for his treatment.”
Yan Shanhua tightly grasped the last bit of fabric and choked up, saying: “Xiao Nian… I didn’t know… I really didn’t know it would be like this…”
Without mercy, I threw off the other party and looked down at this woman who was kneeling on the ground in embarrassment and pain, and didn’t stop my tormenting words.
“I haven’t had a good life these years. Sang Zhengbai only has his own business in his eyes. Although Mrs. Sang’s parents raised me, they didn’t get close to me.” I pointed to the blue iron gate and said, “You carefully framed and hung Ji Chenfeng’s certificates on the wall. But no one has ever cared about my certificates.”
No matter how hard I tried, I didn’t get any recognition, and no matter how much I hoped to get some praise, what I got was just a sloppy excuse.
After years of disappointment, I grew into what I am today, only to be suddenly told one day by a strange woman that I have been occupying other people’s lives for more than 20 years.
Ha, me? Occupy?
In this case, shouldn’t I have hatred? Does a guy who fully accepts reality and wants to give up everything he has to others really exist in this world?
I crouched down and gently wiped away the tears on Yan Shanhua’s face: “You can go tell him what I’m plotting and scheming. But I can also tell you clearly that if you do that, I will hate you and will never let you live better.”
Feeling the slight trembling under my palm, I smiled and continued: “Isn’t everything good now? He is happy, and I am happy too. Only when we are happy can you be happy, right? Don’t worry, as long as the secret still remains a secret, I won’t hurt him.”
After speaking, I straightened up, put my hands in my pockets, and turned around without looking back.
The steps were long, and because the light was dim, I didn’t walk fast. The pleasant feeling of venting my emotions was blown away by the wind, and I couldn’t even hold on to it when I walked down the long steps, disappearing in a blink of an eye.
Halfway to the distance, I simply sat down on the dark steps and looked up at the sky dotted with sparse stars. Looking at it, I sincerely felt… this place, even the night sky is so ugly.
I raised my hand to wipe my face and looked at the tear on my fingertips, reflecting the faint light from the moon.
I remembered Ji Chenfeng’s sticky voice when he said “You are my angel’.
“What angel…” I sneered and tightly curled my fingers. On a dry autumn night, that little watermark completely disappeared in just a short time.
I sat there in a daze and smoked the e-cigarette for a while before getting up and continuing to walk down the stairs.
In the next few days, I didn’t take the initiative to contact Ji Chenfeng. It wasn’t because I was afraid of Yan Shanhua, it’s just that… I just couldn’t get my spirits up.
I wasn’t very worried about Yan Shanhua telling Ji Chenfeng the truth. Although I haven’t spent much time with her, I can tell that woman’s character at a glance—she wouldn’t dare.
Because of living in the hotel, there was no giant screen projection, and I couldn’t watch horror movies for a while. As I had nothing else to do, I went to Alia.
Xu Xi has already learned about the situation at Hezi Fashion from Cai Congcong. She praised me a lot and treated me to lunch.
“In a few days it will be my sister’s death anniversary, don’t forget about it.”
My hand holding the knife and fork slightly paused, and then I answered in a natural tone: “Time flies so fast. In the blink of an eye, I am already in my twenties.”
Xu Xi smiled and said, “If my sister was still alive, she would be very happy to see you grow up so big.”
If she was still alive, I might not be the one sitting here.
Even though I knew that I was a fake, I still worshiped Mrs. Sang as if nothing had happened in the past three years, and this year… I even seduced her son.
If there is really a heaven and hell in this world, Yan Shanhua and I will definitely go to hell to be judged after death.
After finishing my meal, I habitually took out my phone to check the time, only to see the message Ji Chenfeng sent me this morning.
【Can you come and take a look at Xiaocao?】
I haven’t contacted you for a few days, and the first message you sent me is to ask me to take a look at that bastard?
“What’s wrong?” Xu Xi asked while putting on her coat, “You look in a bad mood.”
I stuffed my phone into my pocket and walked out of the restaurant with her: “It’s nothing, it’s just some spam message.”
“Do you want to go to the show with me this afternoon?”
I hesitated for a moment and said, “No, I’m going back to sleep.”
Why did I inexplicably drive to the pet hospital when I obviously wanted to go back to the hotel and sleep?
Looking at the familiar bright blue door not far away, I couldn’t understand my own behavior.
Forget it, since I’m already here, just go in and take a look at that bastard.
After getting out of the car, I pushed the door open, and a noisy argument could be heard inside.
“You quack(fraud pretending to be a doctor), you have to compensate for my baby… you killed it, it was you who killed it! You killed my baby cat for money!”
“Calm down, let’s discuss things carefully, we understand your feelings, but this is not the reason for you to accuse people recklessly…”
“Fuck your mother, our cat has been killed by your doctor, how can I calm down? We came to sterilize our cat, but it ended up dying on your operating table. How can I calm down?”
The sound of a quarrel between men and women came from the small office belonging to Ji Chenfeng at the end of the corridor.
Many pet owners waiting in the consulting room poked their heads out to watch curiously, and several people were gathered outside the door to watch the excitement.
I walked towards the door, and because of my height advantage, I immediately saw Ji Chenfeng standing against the wall inside.
His cheekbones were red and swollen, and his white coat was wrinkled. He hung his head low and his tall body was bent, looking like an abandoned stray dog.
Opposite him were a man and a woman who looked like a couple. The woman was sitting on a chair and crying while holding something wrapped in a white cloth, and the man was fiercely arguing with another middle-aged doctor who was wearing a white coat and looked a little older.
“You must have given an explanation!” The woman roared as a lifeless fluffy silver tail fell out of the white cloth bag.
Ji Chenfeng’s body trembled, he glanced towards the woman, then quickly retracted his gaze, lowering his head even lower.
Oh…did I hear something interesting?
Is this a medical accident? I don’t know who said that they are very good at taking care of small animals?
