Chapter 7 – The Selfish Gene

Home/ The Selfish Gene/ Chapter 7

The messy trunk of the car, unexpected physical contact and the physiological reaction that should not have occurred… The scene fell into dead silence for a while. Just as I was trying to figure this out, a voice appeared out of place.

“Oh, what’s the matter?” Li Qiang put down the suitcase in his arms and hurried over to check the situation.

He really chose a good time to come.

I frowned and backed away. While sorting my clothes, I got out of the car and patted off the floating ash on my body.

“It’s okay, I accidentally fell down.” Ji Chenfeng stood up with Li Qiang’s support, and looked at me while answering the other party’s question.

There was a third person present, and it was inconvenient to talk right. Besides, Zheng Jieyuan was still waiting for me in the car.

The days to come are long, and I can always figure out what is going on with Ji Chenfeng.

“Then I’ll go first, Doctor Ji.” My gaze swept across his lower body, which was blocked by a black apron. If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I never would have imagined it would be so lively.

When I stepped away and passed by Ji Chenfeng’s side, I unexpectedly got a low response from him.

 “…Contact again.” He said.

Domestic and foreign models are usually rented by domestic model companies from foreign parent companies, and Monica was the same at the beginning. Xu Xi selected this girl with freckles from a group of models, paid a high deposit, took her to China, arranged her work, and took care of her traveling and lodging.

But I don’t know which idiot made a mistake, which caused problems in Monica’s accommodation, so that she had to live with Xu Xi temporarily, and thus the relationship between the two started this way.

Xu Xi went from being a super clean freak who couldn’t see a speck of dust on her desk or a drop of water on the sink, to agreeing with Monica to keep cats, and raised three in succession. If she hadn’t managed the company very well, I would have wondered if this woman, Monica, had played a trick on her.

Out of curiosity, I once asked Monica how she persuaded Xu Xi to make a decision that was completely contrary to her own habits.

Monica propped her chin up and smiled like a red fox with an uneasy heart: “Becoming a lover will make everything easier and turn the impossible into possible also Xu Xu is super obsessed with my body.”

Becoming a lover… can make the impossible possible.

I wanted to take the initiative, so I approached Ji Chenfeng and interacted with him. But to be honest, I don’t have a clue about what to do next. Usually, with just one look, people will throw themselves at me, and I wouldn’t even need to worry about it, let alone think about it carefully. This is the first time I realize that making friends is such a troublesome thing.

If Ji Chenfeng can be controlled through other aspects, then everything will become easier…

“Mr. Sang, I’m sorry to keep you waiting. I’m Zhou Jiyu. You can call me Jiyu or Jair.”

The palm stretched out in front of my eyes is white and skinny, the nails are neatly trimmed, and combined with the warm voice, it is easy to make people feel good about the person——well, people other than me.

Putting down my arm resting on the armrest of the sofa, I raised my head, not intending to shake hands with him.

“I have been waiting for you for twenty-four minutes.”

The gentle looking man wearing silver-rimmed glasses was taken aback for a moment, smiled and withdrew his hand, without any embarrassment on his face: “I’m sorry again, I didn’t expect you to come here earlier.”

The appointment was at ten o’clock in the morning, and indeed I arrived early, but so what? With such high treatment fees, shouldn’t you wait for guests half an hour in advance?

“You should have thought of it.” Leaning back on the sofa, I gazed at him sullenly.

Facing my tit-for-tat confrontation, Zhou Jiyu was still very calm: “You don’t need to hold such great malice towards me, we are not enemies…”

He took the clipboard and walked to his desk.

“I’m here to help you, you can trust me.”

I have heard this sentence probably seven or eight times, and it comes from different psychiatrists every time.

That’s really nice of you to say, came to help me? Isn’t it just about taking people’s money to help them eliminate problems?

“Help me with what?” I pulled the corners of my lips and showed a fake smile.

The guy dressed like a dog sat down on the office chair and spoke more boldly than his predecessors: “heal childhood trauma and rectify violent behavior.”

A chaotic scene flashed through my mind, including pain, hunger, and curses from women…..

I didn’t even bother to maintain a fake smile, and my face completely cooled down. The previous ones could at least last for three or four times, but Zhou Jiyu is the first one who disgusts me so much with just two sentences.

Taking out the e-cigarette in my pocket, I got up and walked towards the desk.

“I remember what my father said, are you about the same age as me?”

I stood in front of him, and this time it was him who looked up at me.

 “26.”

“That is only one year older than me, so it can be considered young and promising.”

He smiled, showing no modesty.

Stopping at the desk, taking a puff of the e-cigarette, I looked down at Zhou Jiyu, from his well-tailored suit, all the way up to his handsome and stylish hairstyle.

     “bump!”

I grabbed the other person’s hair and pressed his face hard on the desk.

Zhou Jiyu supported the table with both hands, tried to raise his head, and subconsciously wanted to get up, but I pushed it back even harder. I bent down and sprayed all the smoke on his calm face.

“The rent here is very expensive, isn’t it? Your suit is also not cheap. If you want to maintain these things, you’d better stay out of my business.” I tightened my fingers and said coldly, “If you have investigated me so clearly, then you should also know about the fact that I almost killed someone by mistake a few years ago, right?”

His breathing was slightly chaotic, and it took a long time before he uttered two words: “…I know.”

“You will just be like another psychiatrist to me because I’m too lazy to change it again, but you’d better figure out your position. If I find out that you are trying to control me and play some disgusting psychological tricks, I can’t guarantee that I’ll still miss this time.

I picked up his head and asked him if he understood.

His glasses were crooked, and his expression was still calm, but the mildness and harmlessness that he had pretended on his face had disappeared.

This is just a rarer type of ant. Ants can help me? It’s ridiculous.

“Understood, Mr. Sang.”

“Don’t call me ‘Mr. Sang’.”

Zhou Jiyu let out a breath of restraint from his lips, and changed his words wisely: “Understood, Master Sang.”

Satisfied, I let go of him, put the glasses frame back in place, and pretended to straighten his messy hair.

“Let’s get along well in the future, Zhou Jiyu.” Standing up straight, it was me who extended my hand this time.

He pursed his lips, hesitated for two seconds, and cautiously raised his hand to shake hands with me.

Just a symbolic grip and then let go, I straightened the hem of my suit, and put the electronic cigarette into the inner pocket.

“I’ll be leaving if there is nothing else.” After sorting the strands of hair that had fallen down due to the violent action just now, I turned and walked out the door.

Just holding the doorknob with his hand, I remembered the most important thing I almost forgot.

I turned around and said, “By the way…”

Zhou Jiyu didn’t expect that I would turn back. He jumped up from his chair like a rabbit, as if he was afraid that I would suddenly rush over and strangle him frantically.

“You say it.”

I am used to his panicked face, so I didn’t intend to care about it.

“Prescribe me some sleeping pills, the stronger the effect, the better.”

His eyes flickered slightly, and he seemed a little surprised, but after what happened just now, he has fully understood the incurable “violence” in my bones, so he didn’t talk too much because of fear.

He nodded and said, “Please wait a few minutes in the VIP lounge, and I’ll ask the nurse to fetch your medicine.”

I can’t sit still for a minute, I’ve wasted too much time here.

Opening the door, I went directly to Tang Bian who was playing mobile games in the lounge, asked him for the car keys, and told him to stay alone and wait for the medicine.

“Get the medicine and send it to me. You don’t need to bring me food today. I will be eating outside.” With my back to Tang Bian, I waved at him with the car keys hooked in my fingers.

At eleven twenty, I parked the car outside the White Acorn Pet Hospital.

The last time I saw Ji Chenfeng was two days ago. We said “contact again” to each other, but whether online or offline, we haven’t had any communication in the past two days. Even that stupid turtle was about to be discharged from the hospital today, and it was the official account of the pet hospital that sent me a message.

Pushing open the glass door, the nurse poked her head out from the front desk and recognized me at a glance.

“Ah, Doctor Ji told me to give you the little turtle when you come.” She stood up, picked up a white plastic box from below and placed it on the countertop.

Glancing at Consulting Room No. 3, there is a piece of light-transmitting glass on the wall facing the door. Although the curtain blind is drawn, you can vaguely see the figures walking inside.

Ji Chenfeng is here today, but he entrusted someone else to give me the turtle. It was obvious that he didn’t want to face me.

Instead of taking the white plastic box, I asked the nurses about their lunch break.

“It should be between 11:30 to 1:00, but in fact, there may not even be time for meals when there is an emergency,” she said.

Someone pushed open the door of the consulting room, and Ji Chenfeng took off the mask on his face, and asked something to the middle-aged woman beside him. The woman was holding a chihuahua in a floral dress in her hand, and she listened carefully to Ji Chenfeng’s words, nodding her head in agreement.

The Chihuahua keeps barking, maintaining the same frequency and high pitch, making it so loud that it hurts people’s brains.

When passing by me, Ji Chenfeng glanced at me, and couldn’t help but pause, then walked forward naturally, and sent the woman to the door.

Before leaving, the woman suddenly held Ji Chenfeng’s hand and kept saying words of thanks.

Ji Chenfeng didn’t shake off her hand roughly like he did to me, and he didn’t even frown. He accepted it quietly, without enthusiasm, but without being eccentric at all.

After the woman left, he walked toward my direction, but ignored me, and said to the nurse at the front desk: “I’m going to eat right now, suspend the consultations in the third clinic.”

The other party nodded and said, “Okay, Doctor Ji.”

Ji Chenfeng passed by me to go upstairs, I grabbed his arm: “Shall I treat you to dinner?”

He turned his head, glanced at the arm that was held by me, pulled it, but didn’t move, and the displeasure began to appear on his face again. His brows were deeply frowned, and the corners of his mouth drooped.

“No need, I brought my own food.”

“What happened that night… must be explained clearly? Don’t you have anything to say to me?”

There are people coming and going in the hospital, and many people are already looking at this side. The curious eyes of the nurse at the front desk are blatantly shuttling back and forth between me and Ji Chenfeng.

Possibly because he didn’t want to attract too much attention, Ji Chenfeng quickly compromised: “Understood, let go first, let’s go to the opposite tea restaurant to talk.”

I am sure he couldn’t run away, so I let go of his hand, smiled at him, and made a “please” gesture.

Ji Chenfeng was free, and immediately put his hand into his white coat, quickly opened the door and walked out of the pet hospital.

I followed him step by step, and the two of us crossed the road to a tea restaurant opposite the pet hospital.

At noon, office workers in the surrounding area came to eat here, and there were already quite a lot of people inside. When we entered, there was only a small table in the corner at the end.

The corner is also suitable, quiet and convenient for talking.

I handed the menu to Ji Chenfeng and asked him to order, while I propped my chin and looked at him unscrupulously.

He flipped through a few pages of the menu, stopped at a certain page, lowered his head and said, “I told you, don’t look at me like that.”

Is he some kind of lady in the boudoir who can’t even be looked at by a man? Obviously two days ago, he was cocking his lower body indiscriminately at me, but now he is acting all sacred again, what a hypocrite.

Thinking of this, my gaze moved away from him and I looked into the distance.

Near the window, the child sitting in the baby chair suddenly knocked over the food in front of him, and howled loudly from his mouth, causing all the adults to hug him in a hurry.

The whole restaurant resounded with the child’s cry, and many diners looked at that table with disgust on their faces.

The young mother kept apologizing, picked up the child and walked outside quickly.

Ji Chenfeng didn’t look up at the source of the noise from the beginning to the end, as if it was a common background sound in restaurants, and it wasn’t worth his attention at all.

“It seems that Doctor Ji has a very good tolerance to sound.” I couldn’t help but say.

He turned over a page of the menu and asked, “Which voices are you referring to?”

“Puppy barking, kitten barking, human barking…” If I hear these sounds when I’m already sleep deprived, I’ll go crazy.

He didn’t answer immediately, but said after a while: “If you have experienced the silent world, you will not refuse any kind of sound that comes to you.”

My eyes fell on the black device on his ear, and I asked again: “Do you like any sound?”

     “Hmm.”

The table was already cramped, and the two big men who were around 1.8 meters high were sitting there making it more crowded. The top was fine, but under the table, it was so cramped that with just a little movement of your legs, you could touch each other’s knees.

I lifted my calf up and touched Ji Chenfeng’s knee. Visibly, his eyelashes trembled, and his knuckles pinching the menu became even more prominent.

I laughed: “Doctor Ji, do you like me…”
